World record in the 1500 meters: why Hicham El Guerrouj remains unbeatable

Moroccan athlete Hicham El Guerrouj, world and Olympic champion, still holds the record of 3:26.00 in the 1500 meters, achieved at the Golden Gala in Rome on July 14, 1998.

Originally from Berkane, Hicham El Guerrouj left his mark on the history of Moroccan athletics, becoming one of the most successful athletes in the kingdom and the world. He still holds the record for the 1500 meters, achieved in Rome in 1998 with a time of 3:26:00. No athlete has managed to dethrone him to date. The Moroccan has retired since 2006, after a back injury suffered during the World Indoor Championships in Moscow.
