Morocco and Algeria are engaged in an arms race to the point of raising fears of the possibility of war in the Maghreb.
Since the cooling of their relations, notably due to the Sahara issue, Morocco and Algeria have embarked on a frantic arms race. “The most certain sign is the increase in military spending in Algeria as in Morocco,” warns The confidential. Algeria has allocated 21.6 billion dollars to its army, compared to 12 billion dollars in 2023. It is devoting 23.05 billion euros to its defense in 2025, a budget increasing by 10% compared to 2024. As for Morocco, it earmarks $12.47 billion for its army in the 2024 budget, compared to $12 billion in 2023. The kingdom adopted a budget of 12.383 billion euros for its defense in 2025, an increase of 9% compared to 2024.
