Tomato: Morocco dethrones its European rivals
Exports of Moroccan tomatoes to Europe have increased significantly. Conversely, the Netherlands and Spain, historically leaders, recorded a drop in their export volumes.
Morocco does better than the Netherlands and Spain in terms of tomato exports to Europe. According to a Hortoinfo report based on data from Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat), Morocco, the EU’s third supplier, exported 419,870 tonnes, an increase of 72.71% in its exports over the ten recent years. This volume also represents 17.63% of total EU imports. Between January and October 2024, it imported 2.38 million tonnes of tomatoes for a total value of 4.03 billion euros, with an average price of 1.69 euros per kilo. Conversely, the market shares of the Netherlands, leading exporters with 638,490 tonnes, and Spain, in second place with 460,380 tonnes, fell. Their exports fell by 14.76% and 12.87% respectively over a decade.
