The UN denounces the ban on the veil in sport in France

United Nations experts have given their views on the ban on the wearing of the veil in sport in France. They consider this measure “discriminatory” and call for its cancellation.

“The decisions of the French football and basketball federations to exclude players wearing hijabs from competitions, including at the amateur level, as well as the decision of the French government to prevent French athletes wearing hijabs from representing the country at of the Paris Olympic Games, are disproportionate and discriminatory, and infringe on their rights to freely manifest their identity, their religion or belief in private and in public, and to take part in cultural life”, say four special rapporteurs and the group of work of the United Nations on discrimination against women and girls in a press release relayed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
