The phenomenon of sponsored marriages is controversial in Morocco

If there is one phenomenon that has spread in Morocco in the last two years, it is the sponsored marriage. While some Moroccan Internet users embrace this concept born in the United States, others express their disapproval.

Originating in the United States, sponsored weddings are based on the fact that the usual service providers who take part in a wedding ceremony become sponsors and provide their services for free or at a reduced price in exchange for the publicity and notoriety they gain by sponsoring the event, reports Madar21. In Morocco, the phenomenon has taken off in the last two years. Many Moroccan celebrities are getting involved in this type of marriage. Some companies enter into contracts with them to offer their services in exchange for a hashtag of their page in a publication without receiving any compensation, while others offer their services in addition to paying for advertising on the pages of these celebrities, in order to gain a follower base. Similarly, many traditional clothing stores and people responsible for decoration and makeup, among others, are gaining fame and seeing the prices of their services increase due to their collaboration with celebrities from the artistic or web world.
