Summer spending: how MREs are boosting the Moroccan economy
In Morocco, tourists and Moroccans living abroad (MRE) contribute to the sharp increase in household consumption expenditure during this summer period. What about its impact on the Moroccan economy?
In the eyes of economic experts, the sharp increase in household consumption expenditure not only strengthens short-term economic growth, but it can also help strengthen tourism infrastructure and improve the Moroccan economy’s ability to take advantage of tourist seasons, by investing the income generated by this activity in developing tourism services and improving the quality of local products. The increase in consumer spending during the summer holidays “has a positive impact on various economic activities, whether they are linked to the formal or informal sector; which therefore influences the rate of economic growth, because consumption is one of the determinants of this growth, alongside investment and exports,” assures Hespress Abderrazak El Hiri, professor of economics at the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez.
