Scandal in a “Muslim friendly” retirement home in the Netherlands

Souad recounts the ordeal suffered by his mother in a “Muslim friendly” retirement home in the Netherlands. The establishment was closed after she filed a report with the Health Care Inspectorate.

Looking for a place where nurses would understand Moroccan culture and the Muslim faith, Souad moved his mother from a nursing home near The Hague to one in Amersfoort. But she was far from imagining that her mother would experience an ordeal in RaYan, one of the few retirement homes for Muslim elderly people. There were no daily activities, she lost a lot of weight and almost never went out. “If I had not come during Eid, it could have ended very badly,” assures Souad.
