Sahara: Staffan de Mistura proposes partition between Morocco and the Polisario
The UN special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, is hitting a wall. His proposal to partition the territory, presented during a closed meeting of the Security Council, received no support from Morocco or the Polisario Front.
The Italian diplomat nevertheless put all his weight in the balance by detailing a plan which, according to him, could get the conflict out of the rut: create an independent state in the south of the Sahara and integrate the rest of the territory into Morocco, with a international recognition of its sovereignty.
