Polluted water for Casablanca residents

Despite numerous complaints, Lydec, bought by the Société régionale Multiservices Casablanca-Settat as part of an agreement with the French group “Veolia”, is unable to provide drinking water to some residents of the chic Belvédère district in Casablanca. At least, this is what emerges from the testimonies of some of the company’s customers.

For more than a year and a half, the residents of Rahal Ben Ahmed Street, in the Belvedere district of Casablanca, have been suffering from a real problem related to the pollution of the drinking water supplied by Lydec. February 2023 marks the beginning of this suffering. Their taps are pouring foul-smelling water. Despite complaints filed by residents on February 18, 2023, the company has not been able to find the best alternative to provide them with drinking water to date. The problem of polluted water has turned the lives of the residents of Rahal Ben Ahmed Street into hell, said Hespress Abdelkarim, one of them. Referring to the efforts made by the company following complaints from residents, he said that Lydec’s intervention was temporary at first, consisting of opening new water drainage pipes due to the corrosion of the old pipes, which spread the level of pollution to the other connection channels in the street. According to him, this strategy reduced the effects on the water coming out of the taps, but not for long. This problem arose last April, with the start of work to replace the drinking water pipes in the street. According to Abdelkarim, residents now have to buy hundreds of liters of water daily to satisfy their natural needs for drinking, cooking and washing. Otherwise, they will be forced to consume the polluted water supplied by Lydec.
