Olive oil becomes unaffordable in Morocco

The severe drought affecting Morocco, combined with the scarcity of rainfall, raises fears of a drastic drop in yields and a surge in the price of olive oil, which could reach 150 dirhams per litre.

According to forecasts by professionals in the sector, olive oil prices are expected to reach 150 dirhams per liter next season. An increase that risks affecting the purchasing power of low-income households and making this product highly prized by Moroccans inaccessible. This increase in olive oil prices is due to the purchase by large farmers of the harvests of small farmers before maturity in order to “monopolize and make profits”, explains the site Al3omk Hamid Sabri, president of the Moroccan Association of Olive Producers.
