MREs, pillar of the Moroccan economy
Thanks to money transfers made by Moroccans living abroad (MRE), Morocco is among the main recipients of funds transfers in Africa. Furthermore, the kingdom has climbed into the top 20 in the world.
Remittances from diasporas are expected to reach $685 billion in 2024. This is according to the latest estimates from the World Bank. This notes that these financial flows exceed for the first time official development assistance (ODA) and foreign direct investment (FDI) combined. Better still, these funds offer the advantage of being direct, rapid and unconditional, thus consolidating their role as a safety net for households.
