Money transfers made by Moroccans living abroad (MRE) not only contribute significantly to Morocco’s GDP, but they also represent a real safety valve for families.
MRE transfers, the other oxygen that promotes the development of Morocco. From two million at the start of 2000 to 5.1 million according to consular registers, or 6.5 million (including those not registered) according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, MREs are become a main source of financing for the kingdom. This is evidenced by remittances. Last year, they sent nearly $12 billion in remittances to Morocco, the equivalent of 8% of the national GDP, reports Young Africa.
