Morocco’s gas dream is fading away

The density of drilling carried out in Morocco reached only four wells per 10,000 square kilometers, compared to the world average of 1,000 wells for the same area. This is what an annual report from the Court of Auditors reveals.

National density remains lower than that recorded in neighboring countries such as Mauritania and Senegal, particularly in the field of offshore exploration, not to mention the concentration of most national efforts in the Gharb and Essaouira basins, notes the annual report of the Court of Auditors. The latter points out that the density of exploratory drilling has not seen any change since the launch of the national energy strategy: 374 wells were drilled at the end of 2023, of which only 84 were drilled between 2009 and 2023 while the surface area of sedimentary basins open to exploration is estimated at approximately 761,000 square kilometers.
