Morocco: very very expensive World Cup

Zineb El Adaoui, first president of the Court of Auditors, fears that investments linked in particular to Morocco’s hosting of the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) and the Football World Cup that the kingdom co- will organize alongside Spain and Portugal does not cause the exhaustion of public finances.

“These sporting events for which our country is preparing require considerable financial investments to improve infrastructure in the fields of sports, tourism, communication and transport. (…) These investments require the mobilization of significant financial resources, which could burden public finances,” warned Zineb El Adaoui during a presentation of the Court’s activities for the year 2023-2024.
