Morocco: the death of 158 seized horses raises indignation
An animal tragedy struck the town of Sidi Taibi, in the province of Kenitra in Morocco. One hundred and fifty-eight horses, out of a total of approximately two hundred, perished in the municipal pound. The animals, seized during operations to combat sand theft, succumbed to hunger and climatic conditions.
These horses were used by sand thieves who, when the authorities intervened, fled, abandoning their mounts. Legal complications prevented the auction of these seized animals.
