Morocco: the country where cannabis is king
Morocco, the world’s leading producer of cannabis according to the UN, adopted a law in 2021 on the cultivation and use of cannabis for medical purposes. Since then, legal production of this drug has increased significantly, reaching 296 tonnes in 2023.
Thanks to the 2021 law, Morocco authorized the legal cultivation of cannabis in three rural provinces: Al-Hoceima, Chefchaouen and Taounate. A way for the kingdom to fight drug trafficking in the Rif and boost the economic development of this poor region located in the northeast of the kingdom. And obviously, the fruits seem to keep the promise of the flowers. From 300 hectares in 2023, the areas sown have reached 3,000 hectares this year, RTBF reports.
