Morocco-Spain: CIA concerned about territorial tensions
The CIA, the American intelligence service, has expressed concerns about Morocco’s claims to territories under Spanish sovereignty including Ceuta, Melilla, the Chafarinas Islands and the Velez de la Gomera rock.
In a document published in 2022 and cited by HuffpostThe CIA had addressed the issue of territorial and maritime disputes between Spain and Morocco in these terms: “Morocco protests against the control of Spain over the coastal enclaves of Ceuta, Melilla and Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, the islands of Peñón de Alhucemas and the Chafarinas Islands, and the surrounding waters.” Both countries also claim sovereignty over the islet Perejil (Leila or Parsley Islet), it was specified.
