Morocco fears overtourism

Morocco fears overtourism during the 2030 World Cup which it will co-organize with Spain and Portugal and seeks to avoid it at all costs.

“We have seen excessive tourism all over the world, so we need to make sure we grow our business wisely. We need to be careful not to just think about the World Cup and the six cities,” said Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, at the Future Hospitality Summit in Dubai this week. Morocco expects to welcome 26 million tourists in 2030, the year it co-hosts the World Cup, almost double the 14.5 million travelers expected in 2023.
This expected influx of football fans worries the Moroccan government. The latter has taken measures to cope with this increase, in particular the extension of the kingdom’s three major airports: Marrakech, Casablanca and Agadir. On the hotel side, it plans 150,000 new hotel rooms by 2030.
