Morocco: crooked promoters in the crosshairs of the tax authorities

The general tax directorate is intensifying its controls in Tangier, targeting tax evasion by large real estate developers. The investigation concerns significant sums, greater than 100,000 dirhams per apartment, collected illegally (under the table), particularly in economic housing.

Several developers are suspected of circumventing the formalization of reservations, in order to manipulate their declarations and evade tax on real estate profits. Many refuse to issue a reservation certificate in exchange for large deposits. This lack of legal guarantee puts clients in difficulty in the event of project failure. A customer who, for example, paid 100,000 dirhams under the table finds himself without recourse in the event of a problem.
