Moroccan Sahara: France defies Algerian threats
France took the opportunity of the festivities of the 80th anniversary of the landing in Provence, Thursday, August 15, to reaffirm its support for the Moroccan plan for autonomy in the Sahara. Despite what Algeria says, it has not stopped brandishing threats of reprisals against Paris since its change of position on this issue.
Paris confirms its new position on the Sahara, two weeks after recognizing the Moroccan plan as the “only” solution to the conflict. In a statement sanctioning the one-on-one meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch on the sidelines of the ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the landing in Province, the Élysée Palace maintained that “the present and future of Western Sahara” are “within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
