Moroccan Sahara: American recognition “is nothing but a hoax”

Nearly four years later, the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel continues to be the subject of criticism.

“In Morocco, there was a deception on the part of the Americans when President Donald Trump recognized the autonomy of the southern Moroccan provinces. However, history, geography and the law confirm that the Sahara is Moroccan, as everyone knows, but Europe and the United States want to put pressure on Morocco to gain benefits from it,” said Nabila Mounib, a member of parliament for the Unified Socialist Party in an interview with Sputnik. The American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel was effective in December 2020. For the elected official, it is neither more nor less than “a hoax”. “What happened regarding normalization in exchange for recognition of autonomy confirms an imbalance in relations, but also international arrogance in imposing its agendas and policies,” she denounced.
