Moroccan Sahara: Algeria mobilizes its Parliament and its parties against France

France’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is not to Algeria’s liking. It has mobilized the Algerian parliament, political parties and media against the French decision.

Before France’s official announcement of the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara on Tuesday, Algeria attacked Paris and tried to dissuade it by all means. In a statement published last Thursday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “deep disapproval” of this “unexpected, inopportune and counterproductive” decision. Algiers denounced a “dubious political calculation” and a “guarantee of a colonial fact”, hindering peace efforts in the region. Algeria did not stop at a statement. It also mobilized Parliament, political parties and the media against the French decision. “The shameful decision taken by the French government regarding the question of Western Sahara goes against the usual world diplomatic scene,” the Council of the Nation said in a statement.
