Moroccan identity theft, the favorite sport of Algerian migrants in France
In France, a worrying number of Algerian migrants in an irregular situation usurp Moroccan identities to escape expulsion procedures, reveals a recent report from the Foundation for Research on Administrations and Public Policies (FRAP).
In 2020, the Paris prosecutor’s office carried out investigations into this phenomenon which is taking on alarming proportions, revealing that many Algerians pose as Moroccans when they are arrested for various crimes, which makes it difficult for the French authorities to identify them. . Of 8,250 Algerians arrested in 2023 for crimes, nearly 27% claimed, during interrogations, to be of Moroccan nationality. This practice is more common in the Paris region, in Marseille and in certain cities in the North.
