Mohamed’s fight after losing everything in a fire

Mohamed Aknouch found himself with nothing overnight. Of Moroccan origin, the 64-year-old man, residing in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands, lost everything in a fire which broke out among his upstairs neighbors. Not being insured, his neighbors mobilized to help him.

Mohamed did not have time to collect his personal belongings before his apartment went up in smoke. His passport and driving license are all he has left after the fire that broke out at his upstairs neighbors’ house. “I heard strange noises upstairs. I went out to see what was happening and saw smoke and flames. I took my driver’s license and passport, put on my shoes and jacket, and immediately went downstairs. After about two hours of waiting, I was able to return home. When I opened the door, it was raining water everywhere,” he said.
