Melilla-Nador: the discreet use of smartphones to launder dirty money
To launder money from drug trafficking, certain criminal networks buy luxury smartphones in Melilla to resell them at competitive prices in Morocco.
Hundreds of luxury smartphones arrive every week from Melilla and are dumped on the market in Nador and several other cities in the kingdom. “These devices, transported by individuals who benefit from the relaxation of control at the border post, are then resold in the parallel circuit on the Moroccan market,” informs Assabaspecifying that “this activity harms the Moroccan economy and fuels organized crime by financing it”.
