Marrakech: tourism threatened by insecurity

A violent altercation broke out on the famous square Jamaa el-Fna in Marrakech, between a group of African migrants and juice sellers. This confrontation took a dramatic turn, leading to the partial amputation of the finger of a police commissioner, who intervened to restore order. The victim was quickly taken care of by emergency services and transported to hospital.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the conflict would have started following a disagreement concerning the allocation of sales locations on the square, very popular with tourists. The protagonists were arrested and taken to the police station for questioning, before being released. This escalation of violence, under the eyes of many foreign visitors, is a severe blow to the image of the city and Moroccan tourism, warns Rue20.
