Man faces torture if expelled from Morocco

A 62-year-old Egyptian doctor, Abdel Basset Imam, also of Turkish nationality, was arrested at Casablanca airport while on his way to Morocco for vacation.

The Moroccan authorities are detaining him following an arrest warrant issued by Egypt, which is demanding his extradition for “political reasons”. A former professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Al Azhar University, he was sentenced in absentia to life in prison in his home country. His family fears that he will be deported to Egypt where he would risk torture and inhumane treatment, especially since he suffers from high blood pressure.
