In Algeria, hostility towards Morocco at the heart of the electoral campaign
In Algeria, hostility towards Morocco is tenacious. Candidate for his own succession, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the outgoing president, has placed the question of the Sahara at the heart of the electoral campaign, thus trying to convince voters.
Seeking a second term, Abdelmadjid Tebboune is trying to convince voters to vote for him in September. To achieve his goals, he is highlighting the issue of the Sahara and saying all the bad things he thinks about Morocco. He has tried to link the conflict over the Moroccanness of the Sahara to the right of peoples to self-determination. The Sahrawis “want to live on the land of their ancestors,” he said. He reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting the Polisario so that the Sahara becomes an independent state. “We (Algeria) remain standing, and sooner or later, the Sahara will be liberated,” he added, thus showing that his country is a stakeholder.
