High cost of olive oil in Morocco: Importing to lower prices?

Faced with the continued rise in the price of olive oil in Morocco, which could reach 150 dirhams next season, professionals in the sector are asking the government to authorize the importation of this product, which is highly prized by Moroccans, in order to lower prices.

According to these players in the olive sector, the importation of olives “is inevitable”. It should make it possible to “compensate for the drop in production and make olive oil prices accessible to the Moroccan consumer”. “The weakness of the olive harvest expected this year will mean that the Moroccan market will undoubtedly turn to the importation of this essential raw material”, confirmed to Hespress Rachid Benali, president of the Moroccan Interprofessional Olive Federation, however called on the Ministry of Agriculture not to “encourage” imports and to “limit” the quantities of imported olives.
