French recognition of the Moroccan Sahara: what now?

Ahmed Noureddine, an expert in international relations and specialist in Saharan issues, insists on the need to guarantee a legal impact of French recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

After France’s change of position, the French president put the ball in Morocco’s court, which must conclude the necessary agreements including an explicit recognition of its Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara during Emmanuel Macron’s planned visit, he told Al3omk Ahmed Noureddine. According to him, these agreements could lead to a tangible legal impact, as was the case when former US President Donald Trump signed the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. The American recognition, he recalled, was registered in the American federal register, the equivalent of the official journal in Morocco. The expert in international relations therefore expects that the agreements that France will sign on legal and historical bases will be published in the French official journal to guarantee their impact at the internal level.
