France and Europe do not agree on the Sahara
The European Union (EU) has toned down the French announcement regarding the Sahara. On Wednesday, while Paris affirmed its “clear and constant” support for the Moroccan autonomy planBrussels reiterated that its position, although in favour of a negotiated solution, remained unchanged.
“It is up to each Member State to react according to its own positions. The common position of the European Union in this regard remains unchanged,” stressed a spokesperson for European diplomacy. The EU, for its part, continues to support the UN’s efforts to find a “just, realistic and lasting” solution to the conflict, in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
