Family Code: King Mohammed VI must decide
The Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, presented this Tuesday in Rabat the proposals of the Superior Council of Ulemas relating to the revision of the Family Code. Three central issues were examined: polygamy, filiation and the right of preference (ta’sib) and decisions must be taken by King Mohammed VI.
Concerning filiation outside marriage, the Council proposes that the father, like the mother, be responsible for the needs of the child, without there being recognition of filiation. The latter, according to Ahmed Toufiq, would be contrary to sharia and the constitution and would undermine the family institution.
