Algeria and Morocco, two neighbors who are completely opposed to each other?

For several years, relations between these two North African countries have deteriorated considerably, to the point of raising fears of open armed conflict. At the heart of this diplomatic crisis is the thorny issue of Western Sahara, a disputed territory where Morocco asserts its sovereignty while Algeria supports the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi independence movement.

The situation worsened in 2020, when the Polisario Front broke the ceasefire in force since 1991, relaunching hostilities with Morocco, recalls, in a long report, Crisis group. This event marked a turning point in the conflict, transforming a cold war into a low-intensity armed confrontation. Algeria, accused by Rabat of supporting the Polisario Front, thus finds itself at the center of a complex diplomatic game where the geopolitical issues go far beyond the regional framework.
